The Doña Bárbara Institute of Afro-Latin American Studies is dedicated to the teaching of Spanish language and attendant cultures. It is also the preeminent center for the study of Afro-Latin cultures of the Caribbean and Latin America in Nigeria. The institute supports researchers and scholars interested in the Afro-Latin/Nigerian Hinterland connections by facilitating access to regional tertiary institutions and the National Archive. Other activities of the institute include teaching Igbo/Spanish courses, Igbo language and culture, organizing the annual conference on the Afro-Latin reality and the Nigerian Hinterland, and guided tours of the National Museum of Calabar with its significant display of the history and artifacts of the slave from the Bight of Biafra (Bonny).
